#39: How are you doing? Really?

It’s World Mental Health Day this coming week, so I wanted to dedicate this edition to the topic of men’s mental health.

The statistics are bleak:

– Men currently account for 76% of all suicides in the UK

42% of men have considered suicide

Three quarters of missing people are male

90% of homeless people in London are men

– Men make up the vast majority of the prison population

– Men experience more substance abuse and dependence

– Men account for 79% of drug related deaths

– Meanwhile, the outward expression of male distress causes significant problems for other men, women and children

Unfortunately, I could go on and on.

And these details aren’t unique to the UK. They are mirrored, or even amplified, in most developed countries.

Overlooking the psychological needs of men really is one of the major silent destroyers of our time. Not only do the majority of men not talk about our mental health, most of us don’t even understand the dynamics at play, or what we can do to help ourselves, and each other.

So I’ve filled this week’s edition with resources, articles, videos and podcasts to expand our knowledge and awareness.

If this email helps you, or even one person you know, then it’s been time well spent.

“Life doesn’t make any sense without interdependence.

We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all.”

— Erik Erikson

FINAL THOUGHT

They say no man is an island.

Humans do badly when isolated from others. We need to be part of a community to thrive.

The pandemic may be making it more challenging to find & maintain that community, but it’s more important than ever that we be there for each other.

This week, give someone a call and ask them, “How are you doing? Really?”
